What are your current job responsibilities?
My current job responsibilities are being team leader for the clinical documentation improvement (CDI) program at Mississippi Baptist Hospital. I am also an AHIMA-registered ICD-10-CM and PCS trainer, now instructing the CDI team members and coders in classroom settings on ICD-10.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management (HIM)?
I decided to get into the HIM field because not only was my sister an RHIA and department director, but so were my aunt and cousin. It seems to run in the family! They seemed to love what they did; once I started working for my sister, I was hooked!
What do you like most about your job?
I love that my team works closely with the staff of the hospital, including the physicians, to gather the most accurate clinical documentation, which not only provides accurate coding and MS-DRG assignments, but also quality measures, HAC [hospital-acquired condition] initiatives, and reimbursement for care provided.
What is your favorite area of coding?
My favorite area of coding is inpatient, focusing on cardiology.
What is your least favorite area of coding?
My least favorite area of coding is outpatient.
What are some of your hobbies?
Some of my hobbies include decorating, exercising, spending time with family and friends, LSU sports, and Mardi Gras!
Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
God has perfect timing for everything. Learn to wait on Him. This brings Him honor, and brings you peace. —Psalms 27:14
