Three out of four providers have completed only 25% or less of their ICD-10-CM/PCS conversion process, according to an ICD-10 snapshot survey conducted by the Aloft Group in February.

The survey polled 260 healthcare providers, including:
  • Community hospitals
  • Healthcare systems
  • Academic medical centers
  • Critical access hospitals
  • Acute care hospitals
  • Physician groups
Still, 55% of respondents said they were confident they will meet the October 1, 2014 compliance deadline.

CMS and others have been busy helping to ensure that providers and payers are ready for the transition to ICD-10-CM/PCS.

First, the agency updated its checklists and timelines for small hospitals, physician practices, and payers.

In addition, CMS will hold a conference call at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern) April 18 to discuss ICD-10-CM/PCS implementation planning and preparation strategies. The agenda for the call includes the following:
  • Planning for transition to ICD-10
  • Claims processing
  • National implementation issues
  • National Coverage Decisions
  • Outreach
CMS has also provided two ICD-10-CM/PCS video lectures and an expert article that provide practical guidance for the transition. The lectures are geared specifically for physicians. Physicians who complete the modules can earn continuing medical education. To learn more, click here.

Other organizations, such as HIMSS, AHIMA, and AAPC, offer similar resources. For example, HIMSS has released a series of educational podcasts designed for healthcare providers. The series provides insights from physicians and other content experts on important ICD-10 topics.
