Here’s a little bit about Lisa:
What are your current job responsibilities?
As coding educator for a large tertiary trauma facility in North Carolina, I plan, implement, and educate the inpatient and outpatient coding and CDI staff during our transition of coding classification systems from ICD-9 to ICD-10. This is a fantastic opportunity to instruct, and includes a process with educating on current guidelines and transitioning over to I-10 with the new, more complicated guidelines and rules.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management?
As a late bloomer in deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up and having been an EKG Tech in college, I returned to school in my late 30s as a single mom with a combined passion for the health field and computer training. A career counselor suggested the Health Information Technology program with my experiences and interests. I was teaching MS Office apps at the local community college and he guided me to the coding field. Not once have I regretted it and love every single facet of it all! My career has grown from the bottom up to coding educator and it is my dream job.
What do you like most about your job?
The education of breaking out ICD-10 in a fun way to guide understanding and create thought-provoking questions for us all to learn by.
What is your favorite area of coding?
Although I love outpatient coding and clinical documentation improvement, I am most passionate with inpatient coding and the current ICD-10 transition. I also love DRG auditing because our teams learn and grow so much every time.
What is your least favorite area of coding?
Misinterpretations of coding guidelines.
What are some of your hobbies?
Working with my 19-year-old daughter and our horses in Saddleseat Pleasure, Western, & Barrel Racing. Oh, and planning my wedding next April to a wonderful man and my very best friend!
Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
Her dream, my passion, our reality.
